Walnut & Irish Ash 56 Inch, Irish Ash & Walnut 54 Inch
Bent-shaft paddles, whilst not a new invention, have only recently been discovered by more leisure minded canoeists. Whilst we developed this paddle for marathon & expedition paddling, for covering big distances & big water over multiple days, even weeks, it’s not to say the Curlew can’t be used in more casual & relaxing circumstances, and is quite at home cruising rivers & lakes with friends & family.
The Canoe Around Britain team, who were already fans of our paddles, approached us in 2016 with a request to develop a paddle with which to circumnavigate Great Britain in an open canoe, a feat which no one has attempted before. The keywords for the design brief were: lightweight / efficiency / durability & aesthetics.
The primary timber used in the Curlew is Western Red Cedar for its extreme lightness & good looks and Douglas Fir for its low weight & stiffness. The 9-piece laminated bent-shaft is amazingly stiff for its relative low weight. The blade is almost flat on the power face with a good catch and an efficient profile. Available with either a 10,12 or 14 – degree bend at the throat to give good power transfer and angle of insertion. The grip is offset for comfort and to increase reach. The Curlew is light on the scales and due to a good balance point, feels even lighter in the hand.
To toughen up and protect the blade edges and tip we use the superb Dynel composite cord…this material was developed specifically for reinforcing paddle edges and tips and has very high abrasion & impact resistance.
To keep weight to a minimum whilst reinforcing the blade faces, we use a layer of 4oz S-Glass cloth finished with epoxy.
This paddle’s blade & shaft is protected with several coats of high-quality marine varnish, whilst the grip is sealed and then finished with multiple oil coats, retaining a nice feel in the hand, whilst making for easy maintenance. This paddle is not available in a choice of timbers.
However, we now offer a bent shaft in a standard paddle construction the same blade shape, shaft and grip at a reduced price.
